Petty Trader Loses Wives, 6 Kids In Niger Flood




Sa’adu Abubakar, a tea vendor in Niger, has been bereaved. 

Abubakar, is said to have lost his two wives and six children in the flood that ravaged a community in Niger State after a heavy downpour on Sunday.
According to report, 11 people were killed and over 50 houses destroyed in the flood caused by the heavy rain in Suleja and Tafa Local Government areas of Niger State.

Abubakar who spoke ith Daily Trust, said the sad  incident occurred while they were asleep only to be woken up by the sound of one of the walls of their building collapsing.

Sa’adu said neighbours were unable to assist because of the strong waves of the flood as they watched helplessly as his children and wives were swept away.

Sa’adu who said he initially had two of the children in his arms while the first wife had others, said the wave of the water overpowered them.

He said, “The next thing I could remember was that I was lucky to have been pegged by a tree which helped me to escape death.”

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency officials have so far recovered eight bodies.

The 11-hour downpour started Saturday night and lasted until Sunday morning. Livestock were also killed and hundreds of hectares of cultivated farmlands were submerged.

NSEMA Director General, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Inga, who confirmed the incident, said the agency’s search and rescue operation and volunteers were at the scenes of the disas
